Filipino choirs and composers have won top prizes at the 2022 Busan Choral Festival and Competition (BCFC) in South Korea.
The Philippines’ choral groups Villanueva Chorale of Misamis Oriental, Sing Philippines Youth Choir (SPYC) Tour Group, Imusicapella of Cavite, Balanga Choral Artists, and Bataan Peninsula State University Chorale bagged top honors in this year’s choral contest held in Busan.
Filipino composers Ily Matthew Maniano and Ian Gabriel Corpuz were also named winners in the Composition Competition of the Busan Choral Festival and Competition which judged applicants from 22 countries.
Villanueva Chorale
Misamis Oriental’s Villanueva Chorale was hailed the champion of the Pop and Acapella category for their renditions of pop hits “When You Believe”, “I Believe”, and “It’s Raining Men”.
The group also won the Folk/Ethnic Category Gold Prize and finished as a runner-up in the Grand Prix final of the competition.
Sing Philippines Youth Choir (SPYC)
The Sing Philippines Youth Choir (SPYC) Tour Group won the second prize in the Classical Mixed and Equal Category.
The SPYC also won the following awards:
- Gold diploma in the Classical Mixed and Equal Category
- Gold diploma in the Ethnic Category
Imusicapella
Imusicapella, a church choir based at the Our Lady of the Pillar Parish in Imus, Cavite, won the third prize and a gold diploma in the Classical Mixed and Equal Category.
The Philippines’ Bataan Peninsula State University Chorale and the Balanga Choral Artists also bagged awards in the Ethnic and Classical categories of this year’s Busan Choral Festival and Competition held from October 19 to 22, 2022.
The following awards were won by the Bataan Peninsula State University Chorale:
- Gold diploma in the Ethnic Category
- Bronze diploma in the Classical Mixed and Equal Category
The Balanga Choral Artists won the following awards:
- Gold diploma in the Ethnic Category
- Silver diploma in the Classical Mixed and Equal Category
Filipino composers Ily Matthew Maniano and Ian Gabriel Corpuz were named among this year’s winners in the Composition Competition of the BCFC.
Award-winning composer and former member of the Philippine Madrigal Singers Ily Mathew Maniano came in first place for his piece called “Amihan”, while Ian Gabriel Corpuz placed third in the composition tilt for his work, “Penitensya”.
In 2021, the Philippines’ Jose R. Gullas Visayas Chorale won the BCFC Grand Prize.
In 2019, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers’ assistant musical director, Mark Raeniel Agpasa, was declared the Composition Winner.
In 2017, the University of Mindanao (UM) Chorale bagged the grand prize at the 13th Busan Choral Festival and Competition Grand Prix.
