Three Filipino cheer dance teams have brought home two gold and two silver medals from the ICU World Cup 2023, lifting the Philippines to a remarkable third place among 12 countries.
The event held in South Korea saw standout performances from Southies Cheer Club, UP Streetdance Club, and DanSSA in the competition held from October 6-8 in Seoul.
Southies Rule
The Southies Cheer Club clinched the top spot from the preliminaries to the Senior CoEd Elite Division finals. The team mostly made up of former varsity cheerdancers from the CALABARZON region, outshone two Korean squads in the final to earn gold and the prestigious title of World Cup Champion.
On social media, the Southies shared their victory saying, “There will be times that you will doubt yourself, but with your faith to Him, everything is possible. Pilipinas, we are your International Cheer Union Senior Coed Elite World Cup Champion!”
UP Streetdance Makes History
The UP Streetdance Club made history after securing a gold win that marked them as the first collegiate team ever to compete and win at the Worlds in the Senior Hip Hop Division. The official street dance varsity of the University of the Philippines Diliman who had earlier won bronze at the 2023 World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Arizona, triumphed over two Korean teams in the final performance cheer.
DanSSA Silver Lining
DanSSA, the School of Saint Anthony’s official dance varsity team, won a silver medal and took the 1st runner-up position in the Junior Hip Hop Division. They placed next to Japan and ahead of a Korean team. The squad had previously won bronze at the 2019 World Supremacy Battlegrounds in Australia.
