Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle has been appointed by Pope Francis to a top post at the Vatican.
The appointment of Cardinal Tagle of the Manila Archdiocese as the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples was announced on December 8 in Rome.
Cardinal Tagle is set to replace Cardinal Fernando Filoni, who assumed as the new Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) report said the nomination of Tagle to the Vatican leadership post marks the return of an Asian cardinal in the important department after Cardinal Ivan Dias served from 2006 to 2011.
In 2015, the Filipino Catholic church leader started serving as president of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of Catholic charities around the world. The post made Tagle the first Asian president of the umbrella organization comprised of 165 Catholic charities.
Popularly known in the Philippines as Cardinal Chito Tagle of Cavite, the church leader is expected to be installed at his new post in the Vatican at the beginning of 2020.
The Vatican had also recently announced that Pope Francis will celebrate his first Simbang Gabi for the Filipino faithful in Rome.
SEND well wishes in the comments below to Cardinal Chito Tagle as he takes on a greater role at the Vatican!
