Filipino-American high school teacher Ty Penserga has made history by being elected the next mayor of the City of Boynton Beach in Florida, U.S.A.
The city commissioner and educator became the state’s first out LGBTQ+ Filipino and Asian-American mayor after winning the March 2022 elections.
Penserga claimed the historic victory after winning close to 60 percent of the votes cast in the March 8 mayoral election, according to the WPTV report.

Born in the Philippines, Penserga immigrated to the United States with his mother when he was a child and was raised in Boynton Beach, the third-largest municipality in Palm Beach County in Florida.
Penserga graduated from Suncoast High School in Riviera Beach where he returned to teach chemistry after earning a master’s degree in biology from Florida Atlantic University. He did his undergraduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Penserga previously served as vice mayor and was elected to the Boynton Beach commission, representing District 4 in 2020. He is also a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher.
Community leader Constantino “Coco” Alinsug earlier made history by becoming the first Filipino to be elected to a city council seat in New England, while Melissa Ramoso was appointed as the first Filipino female mayor of California’s City of Artesia, one of Los Angeles County’s Gateway Cities.
