Filipina karateka Junna Tsukii is starting the year strong by ranking No. 3 in the latest World Karate Federation (WKF) rankings.
Tsukii received a boost in the women’s -50 kilogram Kumite category after her 5th place finish at the 18th Asian Senior Karate Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The 31-year-old karateka from the Philippines moved up from fifth to third with a total of 3037.50 points in the world rankings to secure her spot behind Venezuela’s Yorgelis Salazar (1st) and Turkiye’s Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu (2nd).
The first Filipina athlete to win a World Games gold medal took to social media to share about her recent improvement in the rankings.
“My journey this year starts with the 3rd place in the world ranking,” Junna Tsukii wrote in a Facebook post on January 3, 2023.
Tsukii also vowed to do her best in the first Karate 1-Premier League event of the season.
“The tournament starts with the Premier League in Egypt from 27-29 this month. I will do my best to keep evolving,” Tsukii added.
Junna Tsukii has won several medals as she represented the Philippines in international competitions such as the Karate World Premier League, SEA Games, and Asian Games.
