Filipina-Japanese champion golfer Yuka Saso has been named the Philippines’ Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Awards.
Saso was announced on March 7, 2021, as the main awardee of the annual PSA event set to be held virtually on March 27. This is her second major award and the first individual award from the oldest sportswriters association which also recognized Saso and her fellow golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Lois Kaye Go, and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz at the 2019 PSA Award after their gold-winning performance at the 2018 Asian Games.
The PSA cited Saso’s excellent performance as a professional athlete in her rookie year amid the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.
“The 19-year-old Saso was a bundle of hope and inspiration for the more than 100 million Filipinos at a time when local sports took a severe beating as the Covid-19 outbreak cast its huge shadows not only in the country but globally as well,” the PSA said.
Yuka Salo won two back-to-back titles at the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association (JLPGA) her first at the NEC Karuizawa Championship which made her the first Filipina golfer to win the Japan LPGA tour and the Nitori Ladies Golf Tournament.
Yuka Saso’s performance placed her in the lead of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Player of the Year race.
The Filipina golfer is currently ranked 45th in the world.
The PSA Awards will be done virtually on March 27 and broadcast from the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong.
