Filipina actors Shay Mitchell and Liza Soberano are the voices of Alexandra Trese, the heroine of the upcoming Philippine-made anime “Trese” based on the graphic novel of the same title.
Netflix finally revealed the lead voice cast for its highly anticipated new series in a Facebook post on Monday, March 8, 2021.
“Call Alexandra… cause I’ve got news. It’s official, Liza Soberano & Shay Mitchell are Alexandra Trese!!! May strong women always lend a voice to one another, especially when there’s an aswang or two around. Happy International Women’s Day,” Netflix announced.
Filipino celebrity Liza Soberano (My Ex and Whys, Alone/Together) is the voice of the mysterious detective Alexandra Trese in the Filipino language version of the animated series while Filipino-Canadian “Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell voices the English dub for the same lead character.
Filipino-Canadian Shay Mitchell was born to an Irish-Scottish father and a Pinay mother in Canada. She also starred in the Netflix Original series “You” and has been vocal and proud of her Filipino heritage.
Liza Soberano took to social media to share the news with her fans. The Filipina actress was previously cast as the superheroine “Darna” but could not continue with the project due to an injury.
“It’s an honor to be the voice of an iconic character such as Alexandra Trese,” said Soberano. “I’m a huge fan of Budjette and KaJO’s award-winning Trese comics. Maraming salamat! Excited nako!”
First published in 2005 written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo, the black and white graphic novel revolves around Alexandra Trese, a supernatural crime investigator that solves cases that deal with supernatural origins and unravels the mysteries hiding within the streets of Metro Manila.
Trese was first announced to be included in the Netflix programming as one of the five new animated series originally scheduled for release in 2020.
The new release schedule for the series has yet to be announced.
