Filipino singer Marcelito Pomoy flew to the United States for an interview and a singing spot on the widely popular The Ellen Show and was it a performance to remember before a national audience.
He was rewarded with standing ovations from the studio audience and host Ellen DeGeneres.
Pomoy was invited to the show after DeGeneres saw his video, singing a live duet of both male and female voices.
The Filipino singer was bannered on The Ellen Show in social media teasers and show recap titled, “Singer Marcelito Pomoy from the Philippines Will Astound You.”
The “male diva” amazed the American celebrity and studio audience with his performance of the “The Prayer,” a Celine Dion duet with Andrea Bocelli in English and Italian languages even though he could only fluently speak Filipino.
Pomoy revealed on Ellen that he valued the song as the one that changed his life, referring to his winning the grand prize in the 2012 Pilipinas Got Talent – the Philippines edition of the international talent competition.
The street kid-to-celebrity story of the “Man with a Golden Female Voice” was revealed on the show as host DeGeneres asked the Filipino celebrity how he learned to sing.
“I started singing at 7… switching voices at 18,” said Pomoy in halting English going on to tell his story through an interpreter of how people he met as he lived on the streets pointed out his singing skills.
Pomoy also reveals how he worked as a bowling alley pin boy surviving on the one dollar-a-day job for food and then lived in the streets. “Yun and nag-survive ako sa pagkain araw araw at natulog sa kalye,” said Pomoy in Filipino.
A recording artist with ABS-CBN Star Magic and Gold Record Awardee for his “Duet Yourself” album, Pomoy recalls how he decided to join a 2012 international talent competition to be able to again meet his family in Bislig, Surigao del Sur, “Siguro ito na yung way para Makita ko ang family ko.”
He also candidly recalled how at first he did not believe he was being invited by The Ellen Show until he got the tickets to fly to the U.S.
“Here you are because you are amazing,” affirmed DeGeneres of Pomoy’s deserving of the feature.
The Ellen Show feature on Marcelito Pomoy ran for 2 segments with an interview and 2 performances, including excerpts from “The Prayer” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
As a gift to Marcelito Pomoy, Ellen DeGeneres is sending the Filipino to watch a concert and meet his favorite singer Celine Dion in Las Vegas.
