American TV’s Ellen DeGeneres has invited the Philippines’ Blind Balladeer, Carlmalone Montecido, to guest on her show.
Montecido told GMA News that the Ellen show staff called him on February 8 to invite him to appear on American TV. The invitation came after a video of Montecido singing a cover of Sam Smith’s “Too good at Goodbyes” went viral on social media.
Carl said he did not believe the invitation at first, thinking that the call was a scam but later confirmed that it was the real thing.
The young singer shared his excitement at hearing Ellen DeGeneres liked his performance and that he would prepare well and sing more foreign songs.
“And then, nagustuhan daw ni Ellen, so mararamdaman ko do’n masaya ‘ko kasi of all the people here in the Philippines, hindi gano’n kadali makapasok sa industry na ganyan, lalo na at international,” he said in the phone interview with GMA.
“So isa pa siguro sa mga paghahanda ko ay aaralin ko ang show, kung ano ba ‘yung mga mechanics do’n, kung ano posibleng gagawin do’n,” he said.
Carmalone Montecido’s singing the Sam Smith cover at a mall while wearing his school uniform was uploaded online by Facebook user Trixie Madison on February 5, 2020. To date, the post has already garnered more than 14 million views, 543k reactions and 394,573 shares.
The viral video caught the attention of singer-songwriters Sam Smith and Kelly Clarkson. Smith tweeted the video with the caption, “WHO IS THIS KID!!!!!? YOU ARE OUT OF THIS UNIVERSE WHOEVER YOU ARE”.
Twitter user @hanbinniex responded by introducing Montecido to the singer in the comments.
“Hi! He’s Carlmalone Montecido from the Philippines. He’s a talented blind kid who masters a song by just hearing it. He has pure talent.”
Carl thanked his idol, Sam Smith, for giving him inspiration and said that he wishes to have a duet with the singer.
Kelly Clarkson retweeted Smith’s tweet and said “This video has been going around my team as well! This kid is insane!!”
Carl Montecido was a former Tawag ng Tanghalan first season finalist of ABS-CBN’s It’s Showtime back in 2016. He was also among the top 64 finalists of the 2nd season of GMA’s singing competition, “The Clash”.
