Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena ramped up his preparations for the Tokyo Olympics after sharing the gold medal with 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz in the True Athletes Classics meet in Leverkusen, Germany.
The Philippines’ national athlete EJ Obiena and his training partner Thiago Braz of Brazil tied for first place in the men’s pole vault event on June 27, 2021, after clearing 5.80 meters on their second attempts.
Obiena, who recently set a new outdoor Philippine national standard of 5.85m in the Jump and Fly competition in Mossinger, Germany, ruled the competition in the lead-up to the quadrennial meet in July.
The Filipino pole vault champion earlier bested Braz to win the gold medal in the Folksam Athletics Grand Prix in Sweden, his first outdoor tournament of the season.
EJ Obiena followed up the achievement by delivering his season’s best performance and winning the silver medal in the FBK Games held in Hengelo, The Netherlands.
