The Philippines marks the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution today, February 25, 2025. This historic event saw millions of Filipinos unite in a peaceful uprising that led to the downfall of a dictatorship and restored democracy to the nation.
Despite being delisted as a special non-working holiday, history and democracy advocates continue to commemorate EDSA People Power with various activities across the country. Several schools and universities have suspended classes in favor of alternative learning days to ensure the legacy of the movement is not forgotten.
A Revolution That Shook the World
On February 22-25, 1986, Filipinos gathered on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Metro Manila, as well as in cities like Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao, to demand an end to a 21-year dictatorship. The world watched in awe as unarmed civilians, armed only with faith and unity, faced soldiers, tanks, and guns. Now-iconic images captured the spirit of the movement: flowers placed in rifle barrels, rallyists and soldiers exchanging smiles, and food shared across battle lines.
The peaceful demonstration ultimately forced then-President Ferdinand Marcos to step down and flee to the United States, paving the way for Corazon Aquino to be sworn in as the first female president of the Philippines. The world took notice, with many calling it “the Philippines teaching the world what democracy is.”
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) reaffirmed the revolution’s significance in a social media post:
“Today, our Filipino friends honour the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. This peaceful movement, fueled by faith and unity, restored democracy to the nation.”
