Gilas Pilipinas stalwart Dwight Ramos has been named among the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) Breakout Stars of Asia in 2021.
The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles standout and Toyama Grouses Asian import made it to the list of professional basketball players who made breakthroughs with their outstanding performances this year.
The 23-year-old Ramos was recognized for his “maturity and leadership beyond his years” in the national team.
The Filipino-American basketball sensation averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game in two FIBA Asia Cup Qualifier contests against Korea.
“While one of the 23-year-old’s best performances so far is still the “perfect” game of 20 points on 100% shooting from the field and the free throw line against Thailand from back in 2020, his games in 2021 have only assured Philippines basketball fans that he is a star,” the year-ender list said about Ramos on December 21, 2021.
Other players on the FIBA stars list include G-League Ignite’s Dyson Daniels of Australia, Korean basketball player Yeo Jun Seok, Rui Machida and Saori Miyasaki of Japan, Rebecca Akl and Yousef Khayat of Lebanon, Saudi Arabian Mohammed Alsuwailem, Taipei’s Lin Ting-Chien, and Chinese point guard Zhao Rui.
The Ateneo Blue Eagles’ Ramos and Kiefer Ravena and the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ Kobe Paras, and brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño are seeing action in the Japan Basketball League.
The Philippines hosted the third and final window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in Clark, Pampanga.
