Dumaguete City in Central Visayas is the top Asian destination for Chinese tourists travelling independently.
Dumaguete, home to the Apo island marine sanctuary, was ranked first in the study conducted by Agoda.com, a Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq:PCLN).
Topping the 10 most preferred destinations by Chinese travelers, the seaside capital city of Negros Oriental province was cited for its “diving excursions, whale-watching cruises, and riveting cultural sites.”
The Agoda study on the most significant increase in bookings between 2014 and 2015 marked an 805 percent increase in bookings for Dumaguete, ranked in 2014 as one of the world’s best places to retire.
“It is wonderful that more Chinese travelers are planning their own trips and exploring so many new places in Asia,” says Andy Edwards, Global Director of Brand and Communications at Agoda, one of the world’s leading online hotel platforms listing hundreds of thousands of hotels and providing services in 38 different languages.
The Agoda release also quoted Edwards saying, “We believe in empowering independent travelers by having the best deals on everything from beach bungalows to luxury hotels overseas, so we’re obviously thrilled to see this growing trend.”.
