Filipino scientist Dr. Noel Peter Tan, a Medium-Term Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist and head of the Center for Advanced New Materials, Engineering, and Emerging Technologies (CANMEET) at the University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo, unveiled groundbreaking research on biodegradable packaging during his Exit Report Presentation in Iloilo City.
Leading the charge in developing nano-enabled bioplastics from regenerated cellulose, Dr. Tan aims to create eco-friendly packaging materials with enhanced mechanical properties. Traditional plastic, derived from petroleum, faces a sustainable alternative through bioplastics made from renewable sources.
“DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Leah J. Buendia lauds the contributions of Balik Scientists like Dr. Tan, whose work addresses pressing national concerns such as environmental sustainability,” stating, “Dr. Tan’s expertise in nanoscience and nanotechnology has fostered an active R&D environment at the University of San Agustin.”
In addition to his packaging innovation, Dr. Tan spearheads the Membrane Technology for Seawater Desalination Program at CANMEET, focusing on improving solar-powered membrane-distillation systems for more efficient desalination. This initiative holds promise for sustainable water generation, crucial for addressing water access challenges in the Philippines.
Established in 1975, the Department of Science and Technology-Balik Scientist Program aims to bolster the country’s scientific and technological expertise by tapping into the knowledge of Filipino experts abroad. Dr. Tan’s involvement signifies a significant step toward addressing local STI challenges.
“DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico C. Paringit expresses confidence in Dr. Tan’s continued influence in driving innovation and inspiring future scientists,” affirming the program’s commitment to fostering talent within the Philippines.
During his tenure as a Balik Scientist, Dr. Tan developed new courses and provided mentorship to students, enhancing research capabilities and fostering STEM enthusiasm at the University of San Agustin.
The University of San Agustin and DOST Balik Scientist program resulted in the discovery of new compounds for antibiotics and anti-acne products.
