De La Salle University (DLSU) has been named the leading Philippine university in business and economics, with two global ranking agencies affirming its status based on its research output and impact, as well as global outlook and academic reputation, among other criteria.
DLSU was ranked in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) global ranking in Business and Economics, the only Philippine university to make it in the list and repeating its inclusion in the 2020 edition.
In the 2021 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject released this March, DLSU emerged as the country’s leading higher education institution in the field of Business and Management Studies as it made it to the 301-350 bracket. The same rankings show that DLSU is the top Philippine private university in Economics and Econometrics in the 451-500 bracket.
Both rankings apply rigorous performance indicators. While the QS World University Rankings give weight to academic reputation, employer reputation, citation per paper, and H-index (a measure of both the productivity and impact of the work of its scientists and scholars), the World University Rankings include only research-intensive HEIs. For THE Rankings, the criteria put a premium on research resources, global outlook, productivity, and impact.
A DLSU statement says that the recognitions are a result of the efforts of the faculty, students, personnel, and alumni of the Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business (RVR COB) and the School of Economics (SOE), which also recently marked their 10th anniversary as separate academic units.
RVR COB Dean Dr. Emilina Sarreal congratulated her college as well as the School of Economics for this milestone. “Our students graduate and new ones are admitted. New programs and courses are introduced, academic leaders leave with legacies, while new ones take the helm with visions to change. The only constant element for a school of business is its faculty and we recognize their contribution, whether big or small, to a University’s ability to land in global rankings.”
For School of Economics Dean Dr. Marites Tiongco, the feat is a response to DLSU’s institutional achievements. “Now that the University has clinched the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance seal, and getting branded as a regional university, expectations run high for all academic units to perform well. As a result, the School of Economics has to manifest the Lasallian steadfastness in terms of bridging faith and scholarship, allocating talent and resources in the service of God and country, providing quality economics education, and generating research projects that matter to society.”
