Cinemalaya is set to hold its first Online Short Film Festival and Competition amidst the lockdown that closed down cinemas and other entertainment venues to stop the spread of coronavirus disease.
The Philippines’ biggest independent film festival announced on May 19 that its 16th edition will push through on August 14-23, 2020.
“Because we believe that no pandemic can break the Filipino spirit, creativity, and its film community, Cinemalaya continues to sail online on its 16th year.”
The films for the 2020 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival were originally slated to be screened on August 7 to 16, 2020, but was postponed due to the developing situation brought about by the COVID-19 crisis.
Further details and the official lineup of films for screening and competition have yet to be announced by the film festival’s organizers, the Cinemalaya Foundation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Cinemalaya Foundation won the 2019 Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture and Community for its contribution to the development of the film industry.
Cinemalaya films have made their marks in international festivals, including “John Denver Trending” which swept 3 major awards at the 26th Festival International Des Cinemas D’asie de Vesoul ( International Festival of Asian Cinemas in Vesoul) in France, and “Edward” lead star Louise Abuel who won the Best Actor Award at the Dhaka International Film Festival in Bangladesh.
