Davao City’s Chino Sy Tancontian brought home the bronze medal from the International Judo Federation (IJF) Asian Cup Cadets and Juniors Championships in HongKong.
The country’s Judo and Sambo fighter, who delivered the Philippines’ first gold at the 2nd Southeast Asian Sambo Championships in Indonesia in June, competed in the Junior Men’s -81 kg division on July 14 at the Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground.
Tancontian first subdued Do U Kim of South Korea via “juji gatame” or arm lock in the Pool A play, but lost to another Korean fighter Hwanhui Lee via two “wazari by seoi nage” or highest score in shoulder throw. Lee eventually won the gold.
In the battle for bronze, Chino Sy Tancontian subdued Taehyeon Kim, another judoka from South Korea, through “uchi-mata” or inner thigh throw.
The University of Santo Tomas (UST) student athlete praised his Korean opponents and shared that he gained new learning from the tournament.
“Iba’t-iba po playing style nila po eh pero yung second na nakalaro ko po, may na gain po ako kasi po nachecheck ko po yung kung ano mga kulang ko like the stance, technique at approach po,” Tancontian said in an interview with Sunstar.
The 18-year-old college freshman student also expressed how happy he was with his bronze medal.
“Fulfilling po. Sobra. Kasi po nakasabayan ko at nakapanalo po kahit papano ng medal against one of the top junior players around the world po. It wasn’t just Asia po may New Zealand rin po, USA, Fiji Island and Guam,” Chino Sy Tancontian shared.
