Filipino champion triathlete Romeo “Oreo” Puncia celebrated his 34th birthday with a triathlon event for a cause to support frontline workers and commuters in the Philippines with bicycles as alternative means of transport amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The overseas Filipino worker nurse based in the United Arab Emirates collaborated with the BeSeekLeta for EveryJuan project which provides free bikes and helmets to working-class Filipinos affected by the nationwide quarantine.
For his natal day on September 27, 2020, Puncia ran 34 km, rode 34 km, and swam 3.4 km with his APEX Endurance team and was able to raise funds for 34 helmets and one brand new bike for the Metro Manila initiative.
Puncia held the event in Al Ain on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, UAE after completing his nightshift work as a medical frontliner.
“After a long day at work I still managed to end my 34th Birthday with 34km Windy CYCLING, 34km RUN, and 3.4km SWIM for the 34 HELMETS and 1 GIANT BIKE project for BeSeekLeta for EveryJuan,” Puncia wrote in a social media post.
The missionary athlete is known for his #RACEwithaPURPOSE campaign, being the first Filipino UAE-resident to conquer Ultraman Florida last year, all for a Palawan advocacy he founded. Puncia’s Katribo Charities uplift the living conditions of indigenous and tribal communities in the Philippines.
Puncia also finished the challenging Ironman African Championship to continue his Race With a Purpose journey.
Romeo “Oreo” Puncia earlier this year ran and biked indoors over a total distance of 731.63km over 45 hours in a span of 19 days to raise funds for COVID-19 response efforts.
