Cathy Ang is the lead star in the upcoming NETFLIX animated musical film “Over the Moon” streaming this October.
Ang voices the character of 12-year-old Fei Fei who has a passion for science and seeks to prove the existence of the legendary Moon Goddess ‘Chang’e’, that led her in building a rocket ship.
Cathy, a theatre actress in New York, sang the film’s theme song “Rocket to the Moon” in just one take which amazed the production team.
The Netflix film’s Oscar-winning director Glen Keane and producer Peilin Chou lauded the Filipino-Chinese actor’s performance for perfectly encapsulating the authentic qualities of Fei-Fei’s character in her voice.
“When I heard Cathy Ang sing ‘Rocket to the Moon,’ you can feel the desire in her eyes. You can hear the will in her voice,” said Keane.
Chou narrated the day when Cathy recorded the song saying:
“It was actually a scratch session. We didn’t intend that any of that material was gonna end up in the movie. And she stepped into that recording booth so focused and in the zone. We started, and on the very first take, she nailed the song.”
“It was perfect, we could not believe it. We were exploding with excitement, and that first take in its entirety is the actual take that you hear in the final version of the film,” Chou added.
The Fil-Chinese singer expressed her excitement on social media as she promoted the film.
“Thank you all for sharing and supporting our movie 🙏 I am the luckiest kid on the planet (and soon the moon)!!! I cannot wait to share it with you this fall,” captioned Cathy.
Cathy’s most recent project was in “Maybe Happy Ending” as Claire at Alliance Theatre. She was also a Forest of Arden company member in Michael Arden’s American Dream Study.
“Over the Moon” is coming to NETFLIX on October 23, 2020.
Actors of Filipino descent have starred in Netflix films including Fil-Canadian actress Cassandra Steele who starred in Disney’s 2019 animated film Raya and the Last Dragon and Fil-Am actor Jon Jon Briones who is starring in the series Ratched this coming September.
