Filipina Boxer Irish Magno has earned the distinction of being the first Filipina, and the fourth Olympics Filipino qualifier, on the Team Philippines roster going to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The Philippine Sports Commission declared on March 11, 2020, that Irish Magno is the first Filipina qualifier to the 2020 Olympics Tokyo, Japan.
Irish Magno joins pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena (1st qualifier), gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo (2nd qualifier), and fellow boxer Eumir Marcial (3rd qualifier), on the Philippine team at the World Quadrennial Games, after scoring a dominant victory over Sumaiya Qosimova of Tajikistan in the Asia-Ocenia Olympic boxing qualifier in Amman, Jordan held from March 3-11.
Magno set aside her earlier defeat to six-time world champion Mary Kom of India and showed better punches to defeat her Indian competitor in the women’s flyweight division via a unanimous decision victory with a score of 5-0.
The 29-year-old Magno credits the strong unanimous decision result to the fact that she always listened to her coaches as they studied how her opponent fights on the ring.
Filipino boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio will vie for Olympic slots at the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, France scheduled in May.
Filipino qualifiers to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Ernest John “EJ” Obiena and Carlos “Caloy” Edriel Yulo, are being given full support by the Philippines’ sports agency in their bid to win the nation’s first gold medal in the international quadrennial games.
Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz swept the women’s 55-kilogram events to win 3 gold medals at the Roma 2020 Weightlifting World Cup, strengthening her bid for a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
