Alex Eala continues to mark her place in tennis sports history as she makes her first finals appearance at the Australian Open on January 31, 2020.
The Filipina teen tennis champion and her Indonesian partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho will battle for the gold trophy in the Aussie Open’s Final round against the tandem of Slovenia’s Ziva Falkner and the United Kingdom’s Matilda Mutavdzic.
Eala and her partner advanced to the Finals of the Australian Open Junior Girls’ Doubles tournament after defeating top-seeded Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic and Kamilla Bartone of Latvia in three sets,1-6, 7-5, 10-8, in the semifinal round played at Melbourne Park on January 30.
Prior to Thursday’s game, the duo triumphed over the French pair of Aubane Droguet and Selena Janicijevic on Wednesday afternoon with a score of 7-6, 6-2 that led them to advance to the semifinals.
Alex Eala soared to Top 9 spot in the ITF junior tennis rankings released January 13, 2020 with 1452.5 points scored in 22 games she played in 2019, including leading Team Philippines to its first Asia Oceania Championship title.
Eala was given the Tennis Europe award for the Best Overseas Player of the Year in 2018.
