Gilas Pilipinas delivered a golden finish for Philippine basketball at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games, as the women’s and men’s national teams both captured gold medals in their respective basketball finals on December 19 at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The championship day opened with the Gilas Pilipinas Women reclaiming the SEA Games basketball title, defeating host nation Thailand 73–70 to regain regional supremacy. The Filipinas completed a perfect 4–0 tournament run, earning their third gold medal in the last four SEA Games editions.
After building a narrow halftime edge, the Philippines faced a stern test in the third quarter as Thailand trimmed the lead to three points. Gilas responded with a decisive run to restore control before withstanding a late Thai rally in the final minute. Disciplined defense and steady execution in the closing seconds allowed the Filipinas to seal the championship.
Thailand settled for silver in the women’s event, marking their 10th medal in SEA Games women’s basketball, while Indonesia claimed the bronze earlier in the day.
Later that evening, Gilas Pilipinas Men completed the double-gold achievement, retaining the SEA Games men’s basketball crown with a 70–64 comeback victory over Thailand in the gold-medal game.
The men’s team rallied from a double-digit deficit, staying within reach before mounting a decisive run in the final quarter to seize control of the contest. The Philippines managed the closing moments with composure to secure the win and defend their title on Thai soil.
The victory marked the Philippines’ 20th SEA Games gold medal in men’s basketball, extending the country’s long-standing dominance in the sport. Thailand earned silver, while Indonesia completed the podium with a bronze-medal finish earlier in the day.
The twin gold medal wins capped a strong day for Philippine basketball at the regional meet, with both national teams finishing the tournament on top of the podium and reinforcing the country’s stature as a Southeast Asian basketball powerhouse.
