Fashion legend John Ablaza, the Philippines’ first eco-couture designer, is coming home. In an emotional and heartfelt interview with MJ Racadio for Blog Talk Fashion, Ablaza opened up about life, grief, inspiration, and his upcoming fashion show in Manila this July 27, 2025.
Ablaza, known for his internationally acclaimed couture made from sustainable materials, shared his return to the Philippines after years abroad. He recently lost both his mother and brother, a pain he continues to carry. “It’s still hurting, and it takes time for me to really adjust,” he said. “Adjusting to Philippine life is kind of difficult, but adjusting to Philippine life without your mom is more difficult.”
Despite the heartache, the designer draws strength from memories and continues to move forward. “Life has to go on. You must move on and be strong… I think it makes me stronger now that I have to face whatever challenges still have to come to you.”
Ablaza’s return to the Philippines is marked by a powerful comeback fashion show. Initially planned as his farewell to the industry, the event is now a celebration of resilience and artistry. “Most of my friends and family and followers from around the world are telling me, no, you cannot retire… The industry still needs you, so instead of doing a farewell show, it’s going to be a homecoming show.”
Set to take place at Marriott Hotel Manila on July 27, the show will feature never-before-seen museum pieces and new collections aimed at the younger generation. “People in the Philippines should see my important collections… that they have not seen here in the Philippines yet.”
Ablaza also hinted at a special collaboration with the Philippine Embassy in Morocco, inspired by his recent travels to Casablanca and Tangier. “Morocco is one awesome experience… the country is so unique, so beautiful.”
As he reflects on over 40 years in the fashion industry, Ablaza emphasized the deeper purpose behind his work. “Not necessarily by doing fashion shows for enjoying the glamour and glitter of it, but there’s something bigger… I have done a lot of projects that give importance to advocacies and charities. I think that is what makes you important.”
The upcoming “Homecoming” fashion show is organized under SCI to Lin-Manuel Alvin and promises to be an evening of glamour and gratitude. Ablaza invites his friends, family, and followers to “be around and share the fun and happiness and glory of that evening.”
