Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. has called on students of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) to use their scientific knowledge to improve lives in underserved communities.
Speaking at the PSHS-MIMAROPA campus in Odiongan, Romblon, Solidum emphasized the unique identity of “Pisay” graduates. “What sets Pisay students apart is the heart to give back, the passion to serve others, and the drive to innovate,” said Solidum, a native of Odiongan himself.
He encouraged students to pursue technopreneurship and shared that the DOST’s Technopreneurship Program is designed to support young innovators. “At the DOST, we want to nurture this spirit. That’s why we created the Technopreneurship Program to help young innovators like you become your own boss,” he said.
Solidum stressed the importance of combining education, infrastructure, and opportunity for innovation to flourish. “For true innovation to thrive, and for meaningful startups to emerge, three things must work hand in hand: education, infrastructure, and opportunity. And among these, education is the most crucial. Once we strengthen education, everything else follows.”
Students were also urged to collaborate with the DOST Provincial Science and Technology Office and explore the Innovation Hub (iHub) to transform their ideas into real-world products and services.
Innovation Hub in Odiongan to Support Student-Researchers
An Innovation Hub (iHub) is set to launch at the DOST MIMAROPA Provincial Science and Technology Office in Odiongan, Romblon. Mae Angelica Famini, Science and Technology Officer of PSTO-Romblon, announced that the iHub will serve as a co-working space for students and researchers. It will provide internet access, development tools, and mentorship from experts to guide local innovators.
This initiative aligns with similar iHubs already established in Kalinga, Zamboanga del Norte, and Guimaras, aimed at boosting local innovation and inclusive economic development.
Secretary Solidum also visited the future site of the PSHS Academic Building 2, which will feature more classrooms and advanced laboratories. The building’s design is inspired by the DOST logo, with four interconnected circles symbolizing unity and innovation.
