The team behind the groundbreaking Request sa Radyo, the wordless play that had Manila talking headlined by Tony and Olivier-winning actress Lea Salonga and Golden Globe and BAFTA nominee Dolly de Leon, has announced an exciting new chapter for Philippine theater with the staging of Into the Woods and A Chorus Line. These two iconic musicals will debut at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater (S-PAT) in Makati City, with Into the Woods premiering in August 2025 and A Chorus Line following in March 2026.
This new venture is spearheaded by Tony Award-winning Clint Ramos, co-producers John and Joanna Echauz, and S-PAT Executive Director Christopher Mohnani. They are joined by the late Bobby Garcia’s long-time collaborator, Chari Arespacochaga, who continues the legacy of the multi-awarded theater director.
“We all had such a great time during Request sa Radyo and saw a particular space we can inhabit within the vibrant and diverse Philippine theater ecosystem,” said Ramos. “We aim to foster creative dialogues between global theater artists of Filipino heritage based abroad and talented local artists in the Philippines.”
Honoring Filipino Excellence in Theater
The two productions are part of the newly formed Theatre Group Asia (TGA), a collective of globally renowned and locally celebrated Filipino artists. TGA is dedicated to cultivating connections and showcasing world-class theater by Filipinos for Filipinos.
“These productions are about dismantling monolithic ideals of what it means to be Filipino and bridging the gaps,” said Echauz. “The ensemble boasts a stunning assembly of Filipino performers, musicians, choreographers, and production stalwarts. It truly is a Filipino dream team.”
For Arespacochaga, continuing Garcia’s work is a heartfelt tribute. “Bobby was very particular and meticulous. Continuing the work we started is my way of honoring him and carrying on the spirit of fun and love for the craft we infused in everything he did,” she shared.
Reimagining Iconic Musicals for Filipino Audiences
The staging of Into the Woods, based on James Lapine’s book and Stephen Sondheim’s music, will offer a unique Filipino perspective on its themes of power, resilience, and hope. “Our unique lens influences how different our version will be,” Ramos explained. “Hopefully, our context will give more meaning to this already rich work.”
Meanwhile, A Chorus Line will spotlight the struggles and aspirations of theater performers, resonating deeply with the producing team. “It mirrors what we are trying to do—teasing out the different ways of how to be Filipino,” Ramos said.
Mohnani added, “S-PAT is excited to host a musical that highlights Filipino dancing talent. This production will showcase some of the world’s best choreographers and dancers, living examples of the values A Chorus Line glorifies: passion, focus, and excellence.”
Celebrate Filipino Artistry
These productions aim to honor the richness of Filipino history and culture while fostering connections among Filipinos in the global theater community. “Through theater, we can broaden perspectives and expand taste and aesthetics in the service of the Filipino audience,” Ramos emphasized.
