Globe Builds First Solar-Powered Cell Site in Remote Turtle Islands

Globe is building the Philippines’ first solar-powered off-grid cell site on Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands, Tawi-Tawi. This heritage-protected area and wildlife sanctuary will soon gain reliable mobile and data connectivity, transforming the lives of 10,000 residents while boosting eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and economic development.

The groundbreaking project, set for completion by mid-2025, eliminates reliance on diesel generators by using solar power. This innovation will save around 40 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. Equipped with advanced antenna systems and AI-driven energy management, the site ensures sustainable and efficient operation.

The Local Government of Turtle Islands allocated land for the site, with Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul expressing excitement: “Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security through our partnership with Globe and our dedicated government partners.”

Tourism Officer Abrille Yusop Oraiz added, “Turtle Islands is thrilled to partner with Globe to connect our breathtaking paradise with the world. Let’s share the beauty of our islands and empower local communities through reliable connectivity.

Brigadier General Nestor Narag Jr. of the 2nd Marine Brigade emphasized the collaboration’s impact: “This strengthens our capability to safeguard the Turtle Islands and Sulu Sea while bringing crucial connectivity to the community, aligning security with progress.

In addition to digital connectivity, Globe supports waste management by donating trash bins to the islands, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship.
