The Bicol Region is grappling with its worst flooding in 30 years, with Severe Tropical Storm Kristine inundating large areas and affecting over 150,000 residents. Relief efforts by private organizations are supplementing national and local government operations to ensure rapid rescue and support. Here’s how you can help those in need.
In anticipation of the impact of the typhoon, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) on October 21, 2024, placed Bicol under red alert status or Charlie protocol, which it explained, “signifies the highest state of emergency preparedness, necessitating immediate action from both the RDRRMC and Local DRRMCs to protect communities and ensure an effective and timely response.”
The situation worsened on October 22 as Kristine brought rainfall levels surpassing those experienced during Typhoon Ondoy in 2009. Mylce Mella, founder of BicoldotPH, stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “No one could have imagined or expected this prolonged, continuous downpour and heavy rainfall, which has lasted for over 24 hours.”
As of October 23, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) estimated over 150,000 residents impacted across the region.
