Kenneth Cobonpue, a globally renowned Filipino furniture designer, has been honored as the first Asian Pratt Legend. Cobonpue, a Pratt Institute alum with summa cum laude honors in 1991, was recognized for his significant impact on the world of furniture and design.
The prestigious Pratt Institute in New York paid tribute to Cobonpue at the 2023 Legends gala held on November 9, 2023. The annual event honors art and design icons while raising funds for scholarships that support diversity and inclusion.
Cobonpue, alongside Edward Mazria and Kay WalkingStick, received the accolade at a ceremony in Brooklyn’s historic Weylin. The Legend Award, crafted by design student Jessica Yan Chen under the guidance of Dana D’Amico, was presented to each honoree.
Pratt Institute lauded Cobonpue for his innovative handmade designs and his role in promoting Filipino culture through his work. His designs, blending nature, craftsmanship, and technology, have garnered global acclaim, including TIME magazine’s “rattan’s great virtuoso” title.

In his acceptance speech, the Cebu-based Cobonpue dedicated this honor to his fellow Filipino artists and designers. He emphasized the collective effort behind his success, acknowledging his family, business partners, and the craftsmen who bring his designs to life.
“I am very honored and thrilled to be the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to receive the Pratt Legend Awards. I dedicate this to my fellow Filipino artists, craftsmen, and designers who work hard to uplift and promote our country through their work,” said Cobonpue.
Beyond his achievements, Cobonpue is a passionate mentor. He founded the Industrial Design Program at the University of the Philippines-Cebu and chaired the Department of Industrial Design at De La Salle-College of Benilde, guiding over 30 designers.
Kenneth Cobonpue has been recognized by numerous awards bodies including the IFDA Selects Design Awards in the United States and the Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year Awards.
