The school’s entry, a community-scale carbon farming initiative, aims to tackle malnutrition. This ambitious project plans to establish 30 solar-powered enzymatic composting bioreactors and a post-harvest facility. The initiative will rejuvenate degraded soils, boost crop yields, and counter climate change’s negative impacts. Furthermore, it promises to return nutritious produce to local farmers and residents, ensuring food security and accessibility.
Celebrating their achievement, South Hill School announced on social media, “It is an incredible achievement to stand among pioneering organizations and high schools, all united by a shared commitment to tackling our planet’s most pressing sustainability challenges with innovation and ambition.”
The Zayed Sustainability Prize has previously recognized Philippine schools, including Muntinlupa National High School’s solar-powered micro-farm project, winner of the 2019 edition, and Bohol Wisdom School’s automated water-quality system for aquaculture, a finalist in 2022.
Initiated in 2008 as a tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s legacy, the UAE-based Zayed Sustainability Prize champions outstanding sustainability efforts worldwide. The Prize acknowledges nonprofits, SMEs, and high schools excelling in sectors like Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action, and Global High Schools. Since its inception, it has impacted over 378 million lives globally, with 106 winners across diverse categories.
