The PAGASA Astronomical Observatory inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus will open to walk-in guests seeking to use its telescope to view the skies during National Astronomy Week.
The 69-year-old observatory is equipped with a 45-cm. computer-based telescope, the largest operational telescope in the country. The powerful telescope allows astronomers and astronomy enthusiasts to conduct effective observations of stellar bodies and other distant space objects.
Among the regular activities at the Observatory are:
- Observation of sunspots, lunar occultations, planets, and stars
- Observation of the satellites of Jupiter and the transits of Mercury, comets and the other planets
- At times when there are occurrences of significant astronomical phenomena like eclipses, appearances of comets, and meteor showers, the Observatory is filled with visitors
- It is a venue for the educational field trips of most schools in Metro Manila and other provinces for their requests of lectures, stargazing and telescoping sessions
- Overnight stargazing and telescoping sessions are conducted at the Observatory upon request
The PAGASA Astronomical Observatory inside UP Diliman in Quezon City will be open to walk-in guests until February 24, 7 pm to 10 pm.
