Filipino dish Lumpiang Shanghai was named in the Top 50 of the 100 Best Rated Street Foods in the World released by the food encyclopedia, TasteAtlas.
The Philippines’ most popular fried snack variety of lumpia was ranked #45 on the best-of-list released this February 2023.
The only Philippine food on the TasteAtlas audience ratings stayed on the list although it went down 43 notches from its No. 2 spot in the September 2022 ranking.
The new street food ranking released on February 11 and topped by Guotie dumplings from China describes the appeal of Lumpiang Shanghai which found favor with TasteAtlas audiences:
“Lumpiang Shanghai is the most popular variety of lumpia, the crispy deep-fried Filipino snack that evolved from Chinese spring rolls. Even though lumpia appears in numerous variations, the Shanghai version is characterized by a savory filling which combines ground pork or beef with carrots, onions, various seasonings, and (occasionally) shrimps.
“Lumpiang Shanghai is usually sold at numerous street stalls throughout the country, but it is also a staple dish served on special and festive occasions. This delicious and crispy snack is usually served accompanied by sweet and sour dipping sauce.”

TasteAtlas audience ratings previously named Philippine cuisine in the World’s Top 100 and ranked several Filipino dishes on its best-of-lists, including naming Sinigang, a sour soup native to the Philippines, the World’s No. 1 vegetable soup. The food database, however, recently caught the ire of Filipino food enthusiasts for rating Pinoy spaghetti, hotsilog, kinalas, and balut among the worst dishes.
