Filipino-Chinese Canadian immigrant lawyer Winston Sayson has been awarded the 2022 “British Columbia Medal of Good Citizenship” for his outstanding service to his community.

Sayson was recognized by the Government of British Columbia for his “three-decade-long legal career, steadfast service to victims of crime, dedication to the rule of law, and volunteer work”.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Sayson immigrated to British Columbia in Canada, where he built a successful career as a lawyer and served as a community leader.

Sayson was the first Filipino-Chinese Canadian appointed as Queen’s Counsel in British Columbia, a designation he received in recognition of “exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession.”

The now-retired Crown prosecutor dealt with cases of vehicular homicide, domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse, among others, in over three decades of his career.

The awards website said Sayson “experienced PTSD, anxiety and secondary trauma” resulting from the nature of his work and the threats he received. Despite the many risks, Sayson continued to be courageous and advocated for bringing mental wellness to the forefront of his profession.

Sayson’s dedication and outstanding contributions to his community have been honored by multiple organizations. He was given the Criminal Justice System Leadership Award by the Police Victim Services of British Columbia, the Recognizing Excellence Award, and the Leadership Award by the BC Prosecution Service, among many others.

The British Columbia Medal of Good Citizenship recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the well-being of their communities.

Sayson and this year’s winners will be presented with medals at in-person ceremonies throughout the province in 2023.

Filipino lawyers who were recently recognized for their continued efforts to defend worthwhile causes include Angelo Karlo Guillen who received the Baldwin Medal of Liberty for his efforts to defend human rights and environmental lawyer Matthew Joseph Floro who was named in this year’s 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australians Awards.
