Filipino broadcast Journalist Karmina Constantino has been named the new Marshall McLuhan Fellow for Excellence in Journalism.
The Philippines’ ANC News anchor was presented as the recipient of the recognition by the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines’ Chargé d’affaires Colin Townson during the virtual Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar organized by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility on October 27, 2022.
Constantino was awarded the Marshall McLuhan Fellowship given by the McLuhan Program at the University of Toronto and the Embassy of Canada in the Philippines to recognize a recipient’s outstanding qualities in the field of investigative journalism.
Townson recalls how “We started this program back in 1997, so this is a big year; it marks 25 years of continuous partnership between Canada and the Philippines in promoting responsible journalism, responsible media, and of course championing the case of media freedom.”
Upon the presentation of the award, Townson emphasized Constantino’s professional qualities: “An unflinching commitment to speak truth to power, an admirable consistency in ferreting out the most complicated issues of the day, and a stirring courage to ask the toughest questions.”
He also lauded Constantino’s “passion for the craft (that) has seen the ebbs and flows of the news industry in the past two and a half decades and whose wise instinct to clarify and challenge statements and assumptions sheds light into issues thereby shielding the public from the prospects of disinformation.”
Karmina Constantino thanked the panelists and addressed budding journalists in the virtual event.
“I think the future of journalism is vibrant, because as we are here, you are there too; just continue doing the work and I hope to see you in our newsroom soon,” she told young journalists.
In a tweet on the same day, Constantino noted how “Press freedom will always be under attack – from external forces and from within. How free or fettered our lives are – this responsibility falls on all of us.”
Karmina Constantino is among the Filipino journalists who continue to uphold the core values of the vocation, together with other notable journalists who have been recognized by award-giving bodies including Maria Ressa, the first Filipino Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Jessica Soho, the first-ever Filipino finalist in the New York Festivals Television & Film Awards’ Best News Anchor category.
