Contemporary Filipino restaurant Abacá in San Francisco, California has been named among The New York Times’ 50 favorite restaurants in America.
The Filipino eatery located inside the Kimpton Alton Hotel in San Francisco is led by San Francisco Chronicle Rising Star Chef Francis Ang, together with his wife and co-owner Dian.
Abacá made it to the prestigious “Restaurant List” that the U.S. publication is “most excited about right now” released on September 19, 2022.
The restaurant showcasing “the beauty and vibrance of Filipino culture and cuisine” was praised in the Times’ annual list for making “every dinner feel like a party” and serving Filipino food staples like pancit and lumpia, as well as “habit-forming barbecue sticks of beef tongue and homemade longanisa”.
“Look for a QR code that leads you to a “secret” menu of some of the Ang family’s favorite snacks, including balut and duck hearts,” the Times’ Tejal Rao wrote in the annual list.

Also on the menu are pastries and sweet treats such as pan de coco, bibingka, and ensaymada which comes in flavors like ube macapuno and truffle pecorino cheese.
Chef Ang and Dian’s modern take on Filipino cuisine has been praised by locals and food critics alike and has been named among the Best New Restaurants by publications Esquire US, Eater, and Infatuation San Francisco.
Abacá is the sister restaurant of Pinoy Heritage, a Filipino pop-up manned by Ang, his wife Dian, and Chef Danica Aviles.
Abacá joins Filipino restaurants previously honored by the New York Times in its “Restaurant List” which includes Archipelago in Seattle and Chicago’s Kasama, the world’s first Michelin-starred Filipino restaurant.
