Filipina writer Dr. Mina Roces has won the 2022 New South Wales (NSW) Premier’s History Awards for her book, “The Filipino Migration Experience: Global Agents of Change”.
Roces was named this year’s winner of the General History Prize for telling a story about the Filipino migration experience from the perspective of the migrants themselves.
The General History Prize honors a major work of non-fiction, published in book or e-book form, on international history that is of national or international significance and comes with a cash award of $15,000.
“Spanning half a century, and the culmination of decades of reflection on human displacement and dislocation, The Filipino Migration Experience immerses us in the lives and struggles of dispersed communities, families, workers, and activists, taking us from the Philippines to the United States, Europe, East Asia, and Australasia,” judges said about Mina Roces’ winning work.
“The Filipino Migration Experience: Global Agents of Change” was supported by an Australian Research Council Grant and bested two other shortlisted titles in the General History category of the awards.
The Filipino historian and a professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney was honored in an award ceremony held at the State Library of NSW on September 2, 2022.
Dr. Mina Roces is a Professor of History in the School of Humanities and Languages in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture at the UNSW Sydney. She has authored five books and has won awards including the 2019 Grant Goodman Prize for Excellence in Philippine Historical Studies, among others.
The NSW Premier’s History Awards were first presented in 1997 to honor distinguished achievements in history by Australian citizens and permanent residents. The awards celebrate the contribution of historical research to our culture and communities, and to humanity at large.
Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and Filipino migrants who wrote about their experiences include Cebuana domestic worker Ester Vargas-Castillo who has self-published a book of poetry and Donna Avellana Künzler who won Gold at the Literary Titan Book Awards for her book that provides practical tips on how Filipinas can make the most of their new experiences overseas.
