A new creative sourcebook has been released to encourage Filipino students to take action for climate change through theater.
The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd), through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS), together with local arts collective Komunidad X launched “KaLIKHAsan: Likha at Lakas ng Kabataan Para sa Kalikasan”, a sourcebook on using theater for climate change education.
The sourcebook was created to arm Filipino educators, theater and performance practitioners, as well as workshop facilitators with the knowledge to teach climate change to the youth effectively.
The KaLIKHAsan Creative Sourcebook has five main sections, namely, the Background, Framework, Role, Toolkit, and Conclusion. It explains how best to design and facilitate a collaborative performance-making process with young learners that incorporates climate action and the environment as central themes.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones lauded the efforts of the creators for coming up with climate change solutions artistically and entertainingly for teachers and learners.
“Through KaLIKHAsan, we hope to see our learners create their own artistic interpretations of their visions for their community and the country,” Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said in a news release dated October 7, 2021.
DepEd DRRMS Director Ronilda Co noted that the development of the KaLIKHAsan creative sourcebook is one of the ways to strengthen the integration of Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in the basic education sector.
“By elevating our learners’ concerns through their talents and skills, we move forward towards a better society, one that can mitigate and adapt to climate change,” DepEd DRRMS Director Ronilda Co said.
The project was developed following the success of the 2019 Climate Action Advocacy Show which was co-created and performed by 72 student-participants of the Sining Galing from Divisions of Malabon, Navotas, and Pasig City.
According to DepEd, teachers are encouraged to use the sourcebook as a guide in “replicating and localizing the process of creating a Climate Action Advocacy Show to empower the learners toward advocating for climate change solutions.”
