Filipino solar energy movement Liter of Light is using tweeted Messages of Hope turned into giant solar billboards in Italy to call for urgent action and combat climate change during the pre-COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The large-scale solar billboards are part of the “Human Power: Messages of Hope” campaign of the Filipino-born grassroots initiative Liter of Light which has been launched in Milan, Italy, to raise awareness globally for climate action.
“We started our first Messages of Hope in our backyard, creating words of inspiration for our frontliners using solar lights that we had at home,” explains Illac Diaz, Founder and Executive Director of Liter of Light, who is currently in Italy to represent the country in the pre-COP26 event.
The project is a continuation of the 2020 Good Light Messages of Hope collaboration between Liter of Light and GoodNewsPilipinas.com which had Diaz and his family create solar billboards of messages sent in by Filipinos under lockdown to inspire the world to survive the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Now, we have the opportunity to bring these messages to the venues where policymakers are making decisions on the future of our planet. Through these messages of hope, we are ensuring that youth have a front seat in creating the sustainable future we all want,” explains Diaz.
The solar energy social enterprise unveiled on September 24, 2021, its first Messages of Hope to COP26 billboard made from the hand-built lamps of the award-winning Light it Forward challenge in Milan’s biggest venue, the Castello Sforzesco di Milano.
The launch of the solar-powered billboard carrying the message, “Another World is Possible” coincides with the day of the youth-led and global climate strike movement organized by Fridays for Future to raise awareness for climate justice issues all over the world.
“Another World is Possible. Another World is Necessary…Now, we’ve brought our Messages of Hope from the Philippines to the seat of climate change deliberations in Italy and Scotland, co-hosts of this year’s COP26,” Liter of Light captioned the photos of the solar billboard posted to social media.
“Thanks to your messages and tweets, we will continue to AMPLIFY your VOICES that are calling for a better world. We can – we must – do better.
“Thanks to our friends and family for coming in full force to help us with the installation, lighting and the difficult clean up after the event. We are infinitely grateful to Pinoy Power in Milano. Next stop: Como!”
The Messages of Hope billboard in Milan is done with Climate Strike Italia and is the first in a series of pop-up artworks that will be built by Liter of Light in the Lombardy region of Italy and Scotland in the lead-up to the global climate change conference (COP26) in United Kingdom.
Liter of Light is also participating in the special Pre-COP26 program organized for youth climate change advocates, Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition, hosted by conference co-host Italy in late September.
The Liter of Light organization is calling on Filipinos and the youth from across the world to submit messages of hope and act for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) during the Global Week to Act for SDGs through the Human Powered Messages for COP26 on Twitter.
Tweets tagging the Human-Powered Messages of Hope to COP26 on Twitter will be formed into solar billboards in the Philippines, Italy, and Scotland.
