Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo has bagged three major awards in her MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) debut.

The teen pop sensation born to an American mother and a Filipino-American father won “Song of the Year” and “Push Performance of the Year” in the 2021 VMAs for her Billboard chart-topping hit, “Drivers License“.

The 18-year-old Rodrigo also took home the award for “Best New Artist,” beating out fellow nominees 24kGoldn, Giveon, and Fil-Am rapper Saweetie, among others.

“I feel so grateful that I get to write music and make stuff that I love and call it my job,” Olivia Rodrigo said in her VMAs acceptance speech on September 12, 2021.

The Fil-Am singer-songwriter thanked her fans in the acceptance speech, dedicating her win to “all of the girls who write songs on their bedroom floor.”

Olivia told Disney that her great-grandfather moved from the Philippines to America as a teenager.

She and the rest of her family have grown up following Filipino traditions and eating Filipino food.

For her first-ever VMAs performance, Rodrigo took the stage to sing the pop-punk anthem “good 4 u” from her debut studio album, “Sour.”

Rodrigo was also nominated in the Best Pop and Artist of the Year categories which were both eventually won by Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber.

Olivia Rodrigo earlier marked a strong debut and made history as the first-ever singer to start a career with her first three singles in the top 10 on the Hot 100 Billboard chart.

The rising star was also named in Gold House’s annual A100 List to celebrate Asians, Asian-Americans, and Pacific Islanders (APIs) this year.

Rodrigo’s great-grandfather moved from the Philippines to America as a teenager. She has shared that her family grew up following Filipino traditions and eating Filipino food.

H.E.R., another Fil-Am who proudly acknowledges her mother’s Filipino heritage, won the Video for Good award in last year’s MTV Video Music Awards for her powerful song “I Can’t Breathe.”
