Leylah Annie Fernandez is continuing her magical run in the US Open Tennis Championships and is set to play in an epic teen-versus-teen match at the Women’s Singles finals, her first Grand Slam finals at the US Open.
The 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez will go up against 18-year-old Emma Raducanu of the United Kingdom for the Womens’ Singles title and the prize money of $2,500,000 at the US Open finals scheduled for September 11, 2021 (September 12 PST).
The Saturday night face-off marks the first all-teenagers final since 1999 when then 17-year-old Serena Williams beat 18-year-old Martina Hingis to claim the championship.
The Canadian flag bearer of Filipino-Ecuadorian descent secured her finals berth after winning her historic semifinal match on September 10 against No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
The unseeded Fernandez is the youngest player to reach the semifinals of the US Open Championships in 16 years since an 18-year-old Maria Sharapova played the semis in 2005.
The semis win is Fernandez’s fourth upset victory against another top seed in the New York Grand Slam event following her shocker win over No. 3 seed and defending U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka in the second round, followed by the defeat of three-time Grand Slam champion No. 16 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany in the Round of 16, and a quarterfinal win against No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine that sent the Canadian to the US Open Womens’ semis.
Currently ranked World No. 73, Fernandez won her first professional championship title at the 2021 Monterrey Open.
