Filipina racer Bianca Bustamante has been selected for the second edition of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Girls on Track Rising Stars program in France.
FIA announced Bustamante’s participation, along with 13 other senior female drivers chosen from around the world to compete in the global scholarship shoot-out on August 31, 2021.
The 16-year-old karting champion from the Philippines is the lone Asian driver who has qualified for this year’s competition and youth program which aims to get more women involved in motorsport.
“Thank you to the FIA for selecting me as one of the 14 drivers for the Girls On Track – Rising Stars scholarship shoot-out. I fell in love with racing ever since I was a kid, and I haven’t stopped training in preparation for this moment,” Bianca Bustamante said.
“Now that it’s becoming a reality, I will continue to work hard towards being selected for the Ferrari Driving Academy race scholarship. I am so proud to represent the Philippines in this competition and to be the only Asian driver selected is an added bonus, but also adds a bit of pressure to represent the Asia region against the global field. I will continue to train hard leading up to the event and do my best in France!”
Bustamante will fly to France and join a three-day shoot-out from October 21 to 23 at the famous Circuit Paul Ricard where only 8 drivers will be selected to attend FIA training camps.
Finalists will head to Fiorano, Italy for final tests in Formula 4 cars. The winner of the youth tournament will be recruited in the Ferrari Driver Academy with full race scholarships.
The Girls on Track Rising Stars program was launched in June last year by the FIA and the Ferrari Driver Academy with the goal of promoting the best female junior racing talent, with all the drivers in the competition aged between 12 and 16.
Bianca Bustamante has won multiple karting championships across Asia and is a four-time winner of the China Grand Prix Kart Scholarship and three-time Macau International Kart GP Champion.
Filipino racers William John Riley and Jacob Ang also topped the Macau event while Eduardo Coseteng earlier made history as the first Pinoy to compete in the Formula 4 British Championship certified by FIA.
