“That’s going to be a very tough match,” Fernandez said. “She’s a great player, she’s a fighter, she returns a lot of balls. She’s offensive, aggressive so you know what, I’m just going to go on court and have fun like I’ve been doing the past few days…we’ll see how it goes.”
At 16 years old, Fernandez became the first tennis player from Canada to bag the French Open n 2021, the first Grand Slam Juniors title for the country since Felix Auger-Aliassime won his in the 2016 US Open.
She is also the first Canadian female to win a title since Eugenie Bouchard won her title at the 2012 Wimbledon.
The Filipino Canadian netter earlier this year won her first professional title at the Monterrey Open.
Born in Montreal, Quebec to an Ecuadorian father and a Filipino mother from Toronto, Fernandez is currently the world No. 73 on WTA.
