The Philippines’ Yuka Saso has gained two places to become No. 8 in the latest world golf rankings after finishing in the top ten of the women’s golf event in the Tokyo Olympics.
Saso, the first Filipina winner of the United States Women’s Open Championship, was ranked 10th in the world before heading to the quadrennial games in Tokyo.
The 20-year-old golfer finished the Olympics tournament with a 10-under par 274, sharing the joint 9th place with five others in her debut Olympic appearance.
Saso now has a 5.73 average with 200.39 points earned from 34 events played, placing her at 8th in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings released on August 9, 2021.
The Filipino-Japanese golf phenom has been ranked in the top 10 of the official golf world rankings for ten consecutive weeks, following her historic win in the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, which propelled her from No. 40 to No. 9 in June.
Saso was previously ranked No. 8 after the KPMG Women’s Professional Gold Association (PGA) Tournament and the Marathon Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Classic presented by Dana, where she rose to joint fifth place.
Yuka Saso officially booked her Tokyo Olympics berth in June, joining golfers Juvic Pagunsan and Bianca Pagdanganan after completing the KPMG Women’s PGA Tournament in the United States.
Saso is part of the 19-strong Philippine national delegation to the Summer Games in Japan which tallied the best-ever medal haul of 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze medal for the Filipino nation.
