A new recycling facility will soon rise in Ilocos Norte to build eco-bricks from plastic wastes and discarded materials.
The province’s latest eco hub located in Sitio Bato, Barangay Tonoton of Piddig town broke ground on July 30, 2021, to combat plastic pollution in the community. It was initiated by Green Antz Builders, an Ayala-led renewable energy company and the provincial and municipal governments of Ilocos Norte.
When fully operational, the facility will collect trash and litter from the town residents to create eco-bricks, which are building bricks made from plastic that are stronger than traditional cement hollow blocks for use in building and construction.
Eco-bricks have been used to supplement structures in the Luzong National High School (LNHS) in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.
Initiatives in the Philippines that make use of eco-bricks to alleviate landfills and bolster the zero-waste initiative include the quarantine facility built partly of eco-bricks and upcycled plastic bottles by the town’s folk of Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte and the plastics for food barter program of Samar and Leyte.
