The Philippines is guaranteed medals as Filipino boxers led by Olympics-bound Eumir Marcial have entered the semifinal stage of the Asian Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Dubai, assuring the country of at least four bronze medals that could turn into silvers or golds in the next round scheduled Thursday night.
Olympics qualifier Eumir Marcial is going straight through to the semis after his scheduled opponent, Byambaerdene Olgonbaatar of Mongolia, forfeited their middleweight bout on May 26, 2021, due to an injury.
A day earlier, Filipina Asian champion Josie Gabuco entered the semis and is scheduled to meet Uzbekistan’s Gulasal Sultonalieva in the light flyweight division.
Mark Lester Durens and Junmilardo Ogayre also won their quarterfinals matches, sending both Filipinos to the semifinals.
Durens overwhelmed Mansour Khalefah of Kuwait securing a referee stoppage in the first round of the light flyweight division. The Filipino will meet Kazakhstan’s Daniyal Sabit in the semis.
Ogayre dominated Rukmal Prasanna of Sri Lanka, scoring 5-0 in the bantamweight division. The Philippine bet will meet top seed Mirazizbek Mirzahalilov of Uzbekistan in the semis.
