The Philippines’ champion rower Cris Nievarez has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, the 8th national athlete to join the Philippine delegation to the quadrennial summer games scheduled to be held in Japan.
The Philippine Rowing Association announced on May 10, 2021, that the 30th SEA Games Gold Medalist in lightweight men’s single sculls had secured his Olympics berth also in single sculls.
Nievarez is the 8th Filipino to join the official Philippine delegation after pole vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio, and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz. The Philippine delegation is on a mission to win the country’s first-ever gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
The national athlete from Quezon earned a spot for the Summer Olympics after participating in the Asia & Oceania Olympic & Paralympic Qualification Regatta held in Tokyo which wrapped up on May 7.
The Filipino rower was named a Tokyo Olympics qualifier by virtue of continental qualification regattas where 5 national Olympic committees (NOCs) including the Philippines are awarded a slot in one rowing event at the quadrennial meet.
Cris Nievarez’s qualification is the first time in 20 years that a Filipino rower qualified for the Olympics after Benjie Tolentino qualified for the 2000 Sydney edition.
