8 Philippine university scientists named in Asia’s Top 100

Eight Philippine university scientists have been named to the 2021 Asian Scientist 100 which honors outstanding researchers in the region.

The science researchers from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, UP Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle University, Mapua University, San Beda College, and the University of San Agustin were included in the 6th edition of the Asian Scientist 100 list that celebrates the success of the region’s best and brightest, highlighting their achievements across a range of scientific disciplines.

The Asian Scientist Magazine said that although the coronavirus pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, researchers across Asia leveraged their field of expertise in the global fight against the coronavirus disease. This year’s edition of the Asian Scientist 100 honors the trailblazing pioneers and rising stars who made a difference even amidst the especially difficult year.

To qualify for the list, honorees must have won a national or international prize in 2020. Alternatively, he or she must have made a significant scientific discovery or provided leadership in academia or industry.

Desiree M. Hautea
University of the Philippines Los Baños

Hautea was conferred the 2020 Leads Agriculture Award by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology for her research into the adoption of the genetically modified Bt eggplant in the Philippines.

Salvacion Gatchalian (University of the Philippines)
Research Institute for Tropical Medicine

Gatchalian was posthumously honored with the Dr. Lourdes Espiritu Campos Award for PublicHealth for her advocacy for tobacco control and the immunization of children.

Sandra Teresa V. Navarra
University of Santo Tomas Hospital

Navarra was awarded the Dr. Paulo C. Campos Award for Health Research by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology for her research on lupus.

Annabelle V. Briones (University of Santo Tomas)
Department of Science and Technology

Briones was awarded the 2020 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Applied Science Research for designing a mosquito ovicidal/larvicidal trap system aimed at reducing the incidence of dengue fever.

Kathleen B. Aviso
De La Salle University

Aviso was awarded the 2020 Dr. Michael Purvis Award for Sustainability Research for her important contributions to environmental systems engineering as well as developing novel optimization models to guide national and global environmental decision making.

Dr. Kathleen Bernardo Aviso was named among Asia’s Rising Scientists by Asian Scientist Magazine for her environmental research using mathematics.

Francis Aldrine Uy
Mapua University

Uy is the recipient of the 2020 David M. Consunji Award for Engineering Research for his engineering and innovation projects, including a sensor that monitors the structural integrity of buildings.

Francis Aldrine Uy is the project leader of the Universal Structural Health Evaluation and Recording System (USHER), a 24/7 Structural Health monitoring system for infrastructures that greatly improve preparation and response to strong earthquake and typhoon events.

Edgardo G. Vazquez (San Beda College)
Vazbuilt Technology

Vazquez, known for inventing sturdy, prefabricated modular housing, won the 2020 Ceferino Follosco Award for Product and Process Innovation.

Jonel Saludes
University of San Agustin

Saludes was awarded the 2020 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Science Research for his research into the chemical biology of natural products from organisms.

Eleven Filipino scientists from the University of the Philippines (UP), University of Santo Tomas (UST), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of Southern Mindanao were named in the 2020 edition of Asian Scientist Top 100.
