A “Community Paw-ntry” in Quezon City, Metro Manila is now open for Filipino pet owners who may be experiencing difficulties in providing food for their animal companions during the Luzon-wide community quarantine.
Inspired by the original Maginhawa Community Pantry concept, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has set up its own community “PAW-ntry” on April 19, 2021.
The group’s Community PAW-ntry offers free cat and dog food, as well as other pet supplies, to anyone needing help caring for their animals.
The free pet food pantry can be found in front of the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC) which is located along Aurora Blvd, Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights, Quezon City in Metro Manila.
PAWS said the effort will continue to aid pet owners in need as long as supplies and donations last. It will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Sundays and holidays.
The non-government organization also encouraged others to start a “PAW-ntry” in their own neighborhoods to help feed cats and dogs during the nationwide quarantine caused by the public health crisis.
“Please consider putting up a Community PAW-ntry in your community to also help indigent pet owners cope in this pandemic,” PAWS wrote in a Facebook post.
The stringent quarantine measures imposed in the Philippines as a result of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak have left many Filipinos struggling to feed their families and pets.
To help out those in need, another Philippine organization in Metro Manila has begun to provide free pet food and care items to pet owners.
Animal Kingdom Foundation
The Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) aims to work in ensuring the prevention of cruelty and suffering of animals. It also believes that no pet or stray animal should go hungry.
AKF launched the “BARKyanihan Project” on April 18, 2021. Through the help of its volunteers, many community-Pet Ayuda Stations stocked with pet food have popped up in various locations in Metro Manila, Laguna, and Tarlac.
The group is accepting both cash and in-kind donations of pet food to sustain the project.
As Filipino citizens continue to endure the pandemic and its economic impact, the demand for community pantries that provide free food and supplies not only to people but also to animals has increased.
The Philippine animal rescue group Pasay Pups has conducted relief operations in an impoverished area in Pasay City, Metro Manila to help feed underprivileged Filipino families and stray animals during the Luzon-wide community quarantine.
