The Climate Change Education microsite launched by the Department of Education (DepEd) is helping teach Filipino youth about environmental topics like global warming and boosting climate change literacy of students in the basic education curriculum.
The microsite initiative led by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) is a repository of curated resources for assisting educators through lesson plans, videos, and interactive online activities about climate science, adaptation and mitigation, and climate change in the Philippines, among others.
The initiative was lauded by Education Secretary Leonor Briones in a statement released on Monday, March 8, 2021.
“The urgency of protecting the environment has become much more evident,” Briones said. “We have been surviving on a yearly basis; floods, earthquakes, storms have led to the destruction of our infrastructure, of buildings, and of course, the loss of lives.”
The DepEd microsite is divided into four main sections:
- DepEd-Developed Learning Resources (DDLRs)
- References for Teachers
- External Learning Resources
- DepEd’s Program on Climate Change Education
The agency also stressed that the microsite adheres to the fair-use policy on educational materials. It added that the APA citations were already provided on the microsite for the convenience of its users.
The references featured in the microsite are Open Educational Resources and can be used and redistributed for free.
The initiative gathers learning resources and references on climate change from partners like the Climate Change Commission (CCC), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Association (PAGASA), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and the Oscar M. Lopez Center for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management Foundation Inc. (OML Center).
The microsite can be accessed here.
To guide teachers, DepEd-DRRMS also created a manual on how to navigate the microsite in this link.
A free online tutoring platform facilitated by expert educators to support students and parents navigating distance learning from home was also recently launched by the DepEd while its educational episodes for TV are translated into various major Filipino languages as part of the distance learning program for students all over the country.
