Filipino film ‘Mindanao’ starring Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon is set to represent the Philippines in the 93rd Film Academy Awards, more popularly known as the Oscars, as an entry in the International Feature Film category.
The internationally acclaimed film by multi-awarded filmmaker Brillante Mendoza was chosen as the country’s entry after bagging prestigious awards locally and internationally, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) announced via Facebook on November 24, 2020.
“We are pleased to announce the selection of the feature film, “Mindanao,” as the Philippines’ official entry to the 93rd OSCARS International Feature Film category. Congratulations and best wishes!” wrote FAP on Facebook.
‘Mindanao,’ which had its European Premiere in Estonia, screened in Busan, South Korea, Taiwan, Tokyo, and Cairo, Egypt where Judy Ann Santos won the Best Actress award, will compete against over 70 films from different countries around the globe for official nominations to the 2021 Oscars.
Santos, a YouTube Gold Button holder for her cooking show, posted on Instagram – “Sooo much to be grateful for.. ❤️❤️ congratulations team Mindanao! over the film’s another milestone.
The 2019 drama tells of a caring mother to a cancer-stricken child while waiting for the return of her husband who serves as a combat medic deployed in the Southern Philippines.
The country’s’ 2021 Oscars entry film won the ‘Best Picture Award’ in the Metro Manila Film Festival 2019.
The 93rd Academy Awards is scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on April 25, 2021.
Film ‘Verdict’ was the Philippines’ official entry to the 2020 Oscars. The Philippines has yet to receive an official Oscars nomination since it started submitting to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in 1953.
