Three Filipino filmmakers have won top awards at the 36th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF).
A Filipino documentary film, director, and screenwriter bagged honors at the largest film festival in Southern California that recently concluded its 5-week celebration of this year’s edition of the annual LAAPFF.
The Filipino winners were listed in the announcement made through an online awards ceremony participated by jurors from around the world held on October 31, 2020.
The top awards were given to the critically-acclaimed documentary film ‘A Thousand Cuts’ featuring TIME magazine’s Person of the Year– Maria Ressa, director Mallorie Ortega of the musical dramedy film ‘The Girl Who Left Home’, and Valerie Castillo Martinez for the comedy film ‘Death of Nintendo.’
The following are the awardees from the Philippines for this year’s edition of LAAPFF:
“A THOUSAND CUTS”

Award – Global Impact Award (Documentary Feature)
‘A Thousand Cuts’ is a 2020 documentary film that features the story of Stanford University Journalism Awardee – Maria Ressa who risks her life for the sake of press freedom in the Philippines.
“A THOUSAND CUTS advocates and commits to illuminating what is at stake in a world without freedom of the press. This Global Impact Award celebrates those brave and ethics-driven journalists and media professionals who use their bylines and platforms to amplify social and political injustices worldwide,” said Lindy Leong, LAAPFF Senior Programmer of LAAPFF.
“THE GIRL WHO LEFT HOME”

Award – Emerging Filmmaker Award – Mallorie Ortega
(North American Narrative Feature)
‘The Girl Who Left Home’ is a musical dramedy film about a Filipino-American who must put her dreams aside to keep her family restaurant from eviction. It also premiered at the 36th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
“DEATH OF NINTENDO”
Directed by Raya Martin
Award – Special Jury Award – Screenwriting: Valerie Castillo Martinez (International Narrative Feature)
The ‘Death of Nintendo’ is a 2020 comedy-drama film that takes you back to the early 1990s where a group of teenagers enjoys their summer playing games as they grow up. It stars Agot Isidro and Ramon Bautista.
More award-winning Filipino films and personalities that champion Pinoy pride including the Pinoy animated film ‘Ang Lihim ni Lea’ that bagged 9 prestigious international awards and “Aswang” by Alyx Arumpac which won the FIPRESCI Prize in Europe.
